PLAINFIELD — It’s back-to-school time in the Queen City, and that can only mean one thing: haircuts.

In what has blossomed into an increasingly popular and well-received event that annually accumulates more sponsors, the seventh annual Malcolm Nelson-Mills Memorial Back-to-School Cutz and Stylz is scheduled to go on from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Library Park next to the Plainfield Public Library on Park Avenue.

As many as 50 local barbers and stylists hope to offer free haircuts to about 500 city students, according to city Police Officer Leslie Knight, who annually plays a central role in helping coordinate and promote the event.

“It’s going to be just as awesome as ever,” she said. “Maybe more so.”

The event was established to honor the memory of Malcolm Nelson-Mills, who was shot and killed during a robbery in 2001. Individuals and organizations ranging from Mayor Sharon Robinson-Briggs to the Housing Authority of Plainfield to Fathers Against Guns, a local antiviolence coalition, annually lend their support. Dozens of sponsors, including many of the city’s most popular restaurants, signed on for the current year.

Free refreshments, school supplies and mentoring also are offered to students of all ages, with vouchers for free haircuts given out on site. For more information, call 908-397-1543.

Celebrate Chinese New Year: Free Firecracker Chicken – Jan 23

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 09:01 PM PST

Come out and celebrate the Chinese New Year on Monday, January 23, 2012 – If you stop by your local Panda Express restaurant, you can print off the coupons and get a FREE Firecracker Chicken Breast sample!!

Chinese New Year is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. In China, it is known as “Spring Festival,” the literal translation of the Chinese name 春節 (Pinyin: Chūn Jié), since the spring season in Chinese calendar starts with lichun, the first solar term in a Chinese calendar year. It marks the end of the winter season, analogous to the Western carnival. The festival begins on the first day of the first month (Chinese: 正月; pinyin: Zhēng Yuè) in the traditional Chinese calendar and ends with Lantern Festival which is on the 15th day. Chinese New Year‘s Eve, a day where Chinese families gather for their annual reunion dinner, is known as Chú Xī (除夕) or “Eve of the Passing Year.” Because the Chinese calendar is lunisolar, the Chinese New Year is often referred to as the “Lunar New Year”.  Chinese New Year is the longest and most important festivity in the Chinese calendar. The origin of Chinese New Year is itself centuries old and gains significance because of several myths and traditions.
